Tony Rathstone – Former USAF Boom Operator Turned Star Storyteller

We have had the awe-inspiring opportunity to stargaze around the world. From the Caribbean to the Hawaiian Islands, Australia, the Pyrenees mountains of France, to the Camino in Spain, all over the U.S. and as far north as Alaska. Whether from a boat off the coast of Anguilla or beneath the Southern Cross in Australia’s Blue Mountains, we discovered something profound: the star stories and shamanic philosophies handed down by Indigenous peoples weren’t just beautiful—they were transformational. They helped us truly understand and connect to the heavens in ways astronomy alone never could.

From Military Precision to Cosmic Connection

In the military, out over the Bering Sea and the Aleutian Islands, I was taught as a USAF Inflight Aerial Refueling Specialist (KC-135A boom operator) to use the stars to assist the navigator to triangulate and navigate our aircraft. It began as very cut and dry mathematics—angles, coordinates, calculations and one crazy night at 50,000 feet.

And then something shifted. Through the stories, I began to reconnect to what we are. The math was just the beginning. The stars held something infinitely more powerful.

We have been taught these truths by the stories that have been handed down for thousands of generations, but many of those stories are nearly lost. The truth is out there. It’s just a matter of reconnecting to what has been made invisible to us in modern civilization.

For over 500 nights, I’ve guided people under Joshua Tree’s extraordinary skies—combining military-grade night vision goggles with Indigenous wisdom from Hawaiian, Māori, Lakota, Aboriginal, and Polynesian cultures. The Mi’kmaq people call it “etuaptmumk” (two-eyed seeing)—using both Indigenous knowledge and Western science together. That’s our approach.

Guests consistently tell us this experience “changed the way I see the sky forever.” That’s not marketing. That’s what happens when technology meets timeless wisdom under some of California’s darkest skies.
